"Association for the Industrial Promotion of Gold" (APRIOR), a trade association founded under the aegis of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, had a clear mission: to promote the use of gold in mechanical watches to increase their perceived intrinsic value.

Historical Context

In the 1970s, the Swiss watch industry was facing one of its most difficult challenges. Mechanical watches, a symbol of precision and craftsmanship, were in danger of being eclipsed by the advent of cheaper and more precise quartz movements. Furthermore, the world was in the midst of an economic recession, which severely impacted sales of traditional timepieces. To respond to this crisis, APRIOR aimed to emphasize the intrinsic value of mechanical watches, highlighting the use of precious materials such as gold. In 1971, the association filed a patent for the Sigma (σ) symbol, officially registered in July 1972. This symbol, present on the dial, case back, or bracelet, served to guarantee that the watch contained solid gold compliant with Swiss standards.

The Sigma Symbol and Its Certification

According to the patent, the Sigma symbol certifies:
“That the goods are of Swiss origin and contain solid gold up to a certain standard established by Swiss legal requirements relating to the control of the use of gold and meet the standards and quality established by the applicant.”

Brands that have adopted Sigma

Several prestigious watchmakers, including Rolex, IWC, and Patek Philippe, began using the Sigma symbol to indicate the presence of gold in their creations. It's worth noting that some brands, such as Omega, had already adopted their own symbol, such as the famous "OM" (or massif), to certify the same quality. The Sigma symbol was often accompanied by the words "σT SWISS Tσ," clearly indicating that the watch contained gold and met Swiss standards of excellence.

A value that transcends time

The Sigma symbol represented not only a precious material, but a declaration of intent: to underscore the importance of the aesthetic, artisanal, and intrinsic value of mechanical watches at a time when they seemed destined to become obsolete.

The legacy of APRIOR and the Sigma symbol lives on, reminding us of the importance of design, tradition, and quality in Swiss watchmaking.
