How to Increase the Value of Your Watch with Proper Maintenance
Good maintenance preserves a watch and supports reliable use. It does not promise a financial gain: servicing expenditure is not necessarily recovered when selling.
Agree the work first
Request a diagnosis and an estimate separating operation, water resistance and cosmetic work. For a collectible watch, establish whether the dial, hands, crown or other components will be replaced. A new part can support operation while meaning something different to a collector seeking period configuration.
Do not authorise polishing automatically. A marked but well-preserved case differs from a heavily refinished one. Photograph surfaces, edges and engravings before intervention; avoid abrasive cleaning at home.
Keep the maintenance record
Retain the invoice, work description and earlier photographs. Ask which replaced components can be returned under the workshop's terms. Do not infer current water resistance solely from wording on the dial.
When selling, state when the service took place, who performed it and what was changed. This explains present condition, but does not make a serviced watch entirely original.
