The Origins: Rolex Explorer 1016
The Rolex Explorer 1016 is one of the most emblematic models ever produced by the crowned maison. In production from 1959 to 1989, it boasts a 30-year career, making it the longest-running reference in Rolex history.
The Origins
The 1016 is the evolution of the historic reference 6150, which, together with the 6098, gave rise to the Rolex Professional line in the early 1950s. This was followed by the references 6350 and 6298, up to the 6610 – considered the true precursor of the 1016.

The Explorer Face
What makes the Explorer 1016 unique is its dial with 3-6-9 Arabic numeral indexes, nicknamed the Explorer Face. A design that has become iconic, also used on some early Submariner references (such as the 5512 and 5513).Technical Evolution
During its long production run, the 1016 was powered by three different calibers: 1530 1560 1570 The bracelet also evolved: from the initial versions with riveted links, to the folded and finally solid, more robust ones.

A "Matt" Dial to the End
The 1016 was the last Rolex model to retain its matte dial until the end of its production, surviving the general transition to glossy dials that dominated the scene in the 1980s.A Tip for Collectors
The study of the 1016 is a school unto itself. Analyzing its dial variations and subtle differences is a fascinating journey that also enriches knowledge of other contemporary references. If you love the history and evolution of vintage Rolexes, the 1016 is an essential starting point.Davide Vernocchi
