The Origins of the Yacht-Master
Rolex began developing the Yacht-Master chronograph even before the Sea-Dweller. It's believed the brand wanted to capitalize on the success of the Submariner. The Yacht-Master's original design was reminiscent of the early Daytona models, but with a 39.5 mm diameter, compared to the 36 mm of the Daytona at the time. However, in the late 1960s, Rolex decided not to market the Yacht-Master Chronograph, making it a mysterious and rare reference in the history of Rolex design. Only two examples are known.

Yacht-Master: The Evolution of an Icon
Rolex, renowned for its tradition and the rarity with which it introduces completely new models, surprised the world in 1992 with the launch of the Yacht-Master, reference 16628. To understand the exceptional nature of this model, consider that the last new model before the Yacht-Master was the Rolex Daytona, introduced in 1964. After the Yacht-Master, Rolex took another 20 years to present another absolute first: the Sky-Dweller, launched in 2012.

Rebirth in the 1980s
In the late 1980s, Rolex was faced with the challenge of significantly updating and modernizing the Submariner. It was in this context that the modern Yacht-Master was born. The new design featured rounded edges, a permanently welded engraved bezel insert, and oversized hour markers with large hands, making it a masterpiece of aerodynamics and design. However, to avoid disrupting the Submariner, Rolex decided to use this new design to create a distinct model: the Yacht-Master.The First Yacht-Master Marketed
In 1992, Rolex introduced the 40 mm Yacht-Master, reference 16628, in 18K gold with a white dial and movement 3135, the same as the Submariner. This model had a triple-locking crown and was water resistant to 100 meters. Positioned as a luxury version of the Submariner, the Yacht-Master was intended for surface use, while the Submariner remained dedicated to diving.
Subsequent Versions
In 1994, Rolex expanded the range with:- A 35 mm version (reference 69628), intended for the Asian market or men with smaller wrists.
- A 29 mm women's version (reference 69628).
- A 40 mm men's 18kt gold version with a blue sunray dial.
A Modern Classic
In 2012, Rolex introduced an updated version of the Yacht-Master in stainless steel and platinum with a cobalt blue "Sundial" dial. This model became an instant classic thanks to its unique design and combination of precious materials.
