App or Expert: How to Check a Watch's Originality

An app can make it quicker to research a reference and compare details. That does not mean an app is always more accurate than a professional examination. The right approach depends on the question, the quality of the available evidence and the parts of the watch that need checking.

Where a digital tool helps

A reference archive lets users compare photographs, features and configurations without starting from scratch each time. It can help identify a detail worth investigating, organise information and prepare more precise questions for a specialist. Faster access to information does not, by itself, prove that a conclusion is correct.

What requires interpretation

A dial that differs from expectations might be counterfeit, restored, replaced during servicing or part of a variant not yet considered. Resemblance to a photograph cannot settle all these possibilities. A specialist considers the evidence together and explains why a difference matters.

Separate three questions: is the component genuine? Is it consistent with the reference and period? Was it originally fitted to this individual watch? Each question may require different evidence and should not be reduced to a single automatic verdict.

When a physical examination is needed

Photographs and documents may not reveal internal parts, movement performance or every trace of previous work. Where these details are decisive, a qualified professional needs to examine the watch. Do not open a caseback merely to obtain a photograph: asking a watchmaker to do it helps avoid damage and supports a proper assessment.

A practical four-step process

  1. Identify the reference and collect confirmed information.
  2. Prepare clear images of the dial, case, bracelet and clasp.
  3. Compare details and record discrepancies without immediately treating them as conclusions.
  4. Request specialist advice and, where necessary, a physical inspection.

The role of Watch And Check

Watch And Check combines reference tools and specialist support for examining luxury-watch authenticity and components. Available information depends on the reference and the evidence that can be examined. The app does not provide an economic valuation.

For an originality consultation, ask a specific question: for example, whether a dial is consistent with the reference or which further photographs are needed. A useful response also explains the limitations of the assessment and any checks still required.
