“Vignette” dials

Home / Blog / “Vignette” dials
The Magic of Gradients Dégradé, a French term meaning "to fade," is known among Rolex enthusiasts as "Vignette." This captivating design features a color fade, usually from black to a distinctive hue like blue or red. However, it can also fade between two different colors or vary from the same shade in a light to dark gradation.
The directions of the Dégradé gradient can vary:
  • Radial fade: The most common, starting from the outside of the dial and fading inward.
  • Vertical fade: This fade extends along the horizontal axis, going from bottom to top or vice versa.
  • Angled fade: Rare and unusual, with gradients extending in different directions, often without an agreed-upon term.
Rolex has created several highly regarded Dégradé dials over time, but this unique style has also been adopted by many other prestigious watchmakers. Some of my favorites include dials from Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Glashütte.

These dials not only add a dimension of depth and movement to watches, but they also represent a triumph of craftsmanship, catching the light in extraordinary ways and drawing the attention of those who admire them.
