Rolex Explorer 16570

Home / Blog / Rolex Explorer 16570

The Rolex Explorer, the explorers' watch, represents a timeless icon in the watchmaking world, continuing the legacy of its predecessor, the 16550. Featuring a 40 mm Oyster case, water resistance to 100 meters, and a fixed brushed bezel, this model was designed to accompany the most extreme adventures.

The "Polar" Dial

One of the most beloved versions of the 16570 is the white-dial model, known as the
"Polar Explorer." This design combines a white dial with contrasting black indexes, hands, and text, evoking images of the Earth's poles. The red GMT hand adds a distinctive touch, recalling the survival suits used in extreme environments. A true expedition on your wrist!

The Four Versions of the 16570

During its production run, the 16570 underwent several evolutions, resulting in four main versions:
  • Version 1 (1989-1997):
    • "SWISS – T<25" dial.
    • Caliber 3185 movement.
    • Case with perforated lugs.
    • Snap-on strap closure.
  • Version 2 (1998-1999):
    • "SWISS" dial.
    • Caliber 3185 movement.
    • Case with drilled lugs.
    • Locking strap clasp.
  • Version 3 (1999-2005):
    • "SWISS MADE" dial.
    • Caliber 3185 movement.
    • Case with or without drilled lugs.
  • Version 4 (2005-2011):
    • "SWISS MADE" dial.
    • Caliber 3186 movement.
    • Case without lugs drilled.
    • Laser-engraved bezel ring.
    • Solid link bracelets with SEL (Solid End Links).

The Final Updates (2005-2006)

In 2005-2006, the Explorer II received significant updates that made it one of the most sought-after models among collectors:

  • Caliber 3186 movement: Introduction of the Parachrom hairspring, which offers greater resistance to shocks and temperature variations.
  • Laser-engraved bezel ring: A detail that adds modernity and refinement to the model.
  • Straps with SEL: Solid end links for greater robustness. During this transitional period, some models with engraved flanges were produced, still equipped with the caliber 3185, a detail that makes them particularly attractive to collectors.

A Collectible Timepiece

The Explorer II 16570 combines timeless aesthetics, advanced functionality, and a history rich in innovation. With its unique variations and significant updates, this model is an ideal candidate for any collection. If you're looking for a watch that embodies adventure and refinement, the 16570 is an essential choice.
