Jean-Claude Killy & the Rolex "Dato-Compax"

Home / Blog / Jean-Claude Killy & the Rolex "Dato-Compax"
Jean-Claude Killy, the legendary French Olympic ski champion, left an indelible mark on the history of sport with his extraordinary victories in the three Alpine events of the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. But Killy wasn't just an exceptional athlete: he was also a movie star, a racing driver, an entrepreneur, and even a helicopter pilot!

The Rolex Jean-Claude Killy

The Rolex that bears his name is one of the Maison's most iconic and coveted pieces. Also commonly referred to as the "Dato-Compax," this masterpiece is distinguished by its rare triple calendar complication with chronograph function, a unique feature in Rolex history. The models associated with Killy are available in five references:
  • 4767
  • 4768
  • 5036
  • 6036
  • 6236
However, there is some debate among experts: Sotheby's does not include reference 4768 in the list of watches officially associated with Killy. toure Rolex Dato-Compax ref. 4768 – (ph.: Phillips.com)

A Transitional Era for Rolex

These triple calendar chronographs were produced in small quantities between the late 1940s and early 1960s. After retiring them, Rolex definitively abandoned triple calendar complications, focusing instead on the production of professional steel sports watches, such as the Submariner and GMT-Master lines. Despite this, the Jean-Claude Killy watches maintain a sporty character:
  • All models (except reference 4768) are equipped with a waterproof Oyster case.
  • They have a chronograph function, making them both elegant and practical.

What makes JCK watches so special?

  1. Limited production: The very small run makes them incredibly rare and coveted.
  2. Unique aesthetic: Their elegant and complex design is a perfect example of haute horlogerie from the 1950s and 1960s.
  3. The Killy Connection: While there's no definitive evidence that Killy collaborated with Rolex, he is said to have owned one of these models in his personal collection.

Why "Dato-Compax"?

  • "Dato" comes from Italian and refers to the calendar function.
  • "Compax" refers to the movement's complications, a rare and extraordinary combination.
