Rolex Ref. 4113 Split-Seconds Watch - The Holy Grail of Watches

Home / Blog / Rolex Ref. 4113 Split-Seconds Watch - The Holy Gra...
The Rolex 4113 “Split Seconds” is an extraordinarily rare and unique watch, considered the "Holy Grail" by watch enthusiasts. Produced in extremely limited numbers in 1942, at the height of World War II, it stands out for several features that make it special.
One of its first distinguishing features is its 44 mm diameter, exceptional for the era, when watches tended to be much smaller. This large size was functional, allowing for the inclusion of an easy-to-read tachymeter and telemeter scale on the dial.
The stainless steel case features three pushers on the right side, one of which is integrated into the crown. These pushers operate the "Split Seconds" chronograph, a rare and unique complication for Rolex. This watch was never officially offered for sale by Rolex, but it is believed that it was reserved for race car drivers with whom the company was involved. Only twelve examples were produced, and the origins of three of them are still unknown. Aesthetically, the Rolex 4113 is striking. Its oversized case has a thin bezel and a silver dial that has taken on a beautiful cream hue over time. The applied rose gold hour markers are modest, enhancing the dial's sense of spaciousness. All functions, including the telemeter and tachymeter scales, are well-spaced and easy to read.
