Royal Oak 25554 – Audemars Piguet's first perpetual calendar
At the heart of the 1984 Baselworld, Audemars Piguet presented a revolutionary evolution of its iconic Royal Oak: the model 5554, renamed shortly thereafter 25554, the first Royal Oak to feature a perpetual calendar.
This historic reference introduced the elegant perpetual calendar complication (day, date, month, and moon phases) in an extra-thin 39 mm case, thanks to the caliber 2120/2800, measuring just 3.95 mm thick. The technical challenge was ambitious: integrating this complication into a case as thin as that of the Royal Oak 5402, which housed the 3.05 mm caliber 2121.
To achieve this, Audemars Piguet slightly modified the structure: a slightly raised bezel, a thinner sapphire crystal, and the placement of the calendar correctors in three distinct locations. The result was a case just 7.5 mm thick, only 0.4 mm thicker than the 5402.

This prompted the manufacturer, in 1987, to revise the internal structure of the case, leading to the creation of the model 25654, visually identical but with an 8.3 mm case.
From 1984 to 1992, approximately 270 examples of the model 25554 were produced in all material variants:

An extremely rare and sophisticated production
Although the official presentation took place in April, the first piece was not delivered until December 1984: it was a yellow gold model. Production was extremely limited and required advanced craftsmanship, particularly for case fitting and waterproofing. This prompted the manufacturer, in 1987, to revise the internal structure of the case, leading to the creation of the model 25654, visually identical but with an 8.3 mm case.
From 1984 to 1992, approximately 270 examples of the model 25554 were produced in all material variants:

Royal Oak 25554ST – The rare steel
The steel version, identified as 25554ST, is the rarest. Only 46 pieces were delivered, all made from cases originally intended for the 5402ST (D series), later adapted to accommodate the new perpetual calendar caliber. Each case bears a double serial number: that of the 5402ST and a sequential number from 1 to 50 for the 25554 (not all numbers were assigned). The steel variant was the star of the 1984 press kit, immortalized with a gray dial with polished subdials. However, the first steel pieces were actually delivered only in 1985, with matte gray dials. There is also an extremely rare example with a black dial, much loved by watchmakers of the time for its beauty but also its fragility.
