Air-King: The Evolution of a Rolex Icon
The first Air-King, the reference 4925, was introduced with features similar to other bubble-back models of the time. It featured a cream-colored dial with even Arabic numerals. This model was followed by other references, such as the 4499, all equipped with manually wound Hunter movements, similar to Rolex's stainless steel Oyster watches.
In 1953, the Air-King began to develop its own identity with the reference 6652, equipped with the caliber 1030. This model introduced the cream-colored silver dial and baton indexes, elements that would become iconic with the subsequent Ref. 5500.
The Classic: Ref. 5500 (1957-1994)
In 1957, Rolex launched the reference that would define the Air-King for the next 37 years: the Ref. 5500. With a 34 mm Oystersteel case, the Ref. 5500 was equipped with either the caliber 1520 or 1530, depending on the production period. While not certified as a chronometer, this model featured the inscriptions "Precision" (Cal. 1520) or "Super Precision" (Cal. 1530) on the dial. Among the most sought-after variants by collectors is the "double red," with the inscriptions "Air-King" and "super precision" in red. During its 37 years of production, the Ref. 5500 saw numerous variations, including slate gray and black dials, as well as models with company stampings, such as the exclusive Air-King "Dominos Pizza" (see photo).

Evolution: Ref. 14000 and Its Variations (1989-2007)
In 1989, Rolex introduced the Ref. 14000, an update to the Ref. 5500. This model featured Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, a new 3000 caliber, and a sapphire crystal. The Ref. 14010 introduced an "engine-turned" bezel, a more understated alternative to the Datejust's fluted bezel. Both references were updated in 2000 with the 3130 caliber movement, the same one used in the Explorer Ref. 114270.Modernity: Ref. 114200 and New Certifications (2007)
In 2007, Rolex replaced the 14000 collection with the Ref. 114200, which earned chronometer certification for the first time. That same year, the Ref. 114234, with a fluted white gold bezel, and the Ref. 114210, with a motor-driven bezel. These references continued to use the 3130 caliber, marking a further evolution of the Air-King's design and performance.Hai domande?
